Last week my friend, who is Christian, expressed doubt in “faith” because he was watching the people that he loves pray and be devout Christians, good people at that, and come up with the short end of the stick all of the time. He asked how could that be?
My response, without trying to completely dismantle his faith, was that people are basically stuck with the cards that they are dealt, and that it’s up to them to make the best out of it. Some born rich, some born poor. Some come from abusive families, many come from loving families, regardless of faith.
Furthermore, the ole “I do this, and God does that” philosophy does not work. I used to be a devout (lol) craps Player at the casinos and there are alot of superstitions that are applied to the table (don’t let the dice hit the money, or hit the door) that seem to always come to pass, but at the end of the day, its all chance and probability. The superstition is only in our heads.
So my question is, not to say religion does not work in people’s lives, but the common denominator in humanity is that some people are good, some do bad things, some have wonderful lives, some have crappy lives regardless of faith/no faith god/ no god. An objective look would show that no religion/belief is improving lives more than another.
Is this a fair assessment?
(I need to check my grammar btw)

Nah, for me life is about finding something shiny to look at to distract my attention as i wait to die.
You aren’t stuck with the cards you’re dealt, I asked for 3 more & it changed my life!
Why yes, yes it is.
You got it. I raise you twenty. Am I bluffing?
Yes and No…The bible does say that God sends the rain ( his blessings) on the righteous and the unrighteous alike. However, God uses the bad things that we have to endure on a daily basis to bring us closer to Him and to refine the believers.
Think of it this way… I get sick and I pray to get well, therefore I am thinking of God. Or I get sick and I pray but I don’t get well, perhaps I should evaluate my faithfulness and willingness to repent. Or I get sick and i am faithful yet God still wont heal me, then I must be in training for perseverance for something in the future.
Life is about playing the cards and having faith that you’ll eventually win.
To some degree I would say you are correct. We have no choice where we are born, or what family we are born into. We have no control on anything outside of ourselves. So, in that respect we have to “play” the hand that is dealt us. However, I agree with the Apostle Paul that the secret to happiness is being content in all circumstances. We can’t find our happiness in our circumstances because they are always changing.
I also know that God answers prayers. Not always the way we like, but He does answer them, either “yes”, “no” or “not yet”. We are not without hope when we trust in the Lord. “God works all things to the good, for those that love God, and are called according to His purposes”, so saith the Scripture.
God is Sovereign and there are too many things that happen, take the founding of our nation, which should never have happened….how could a small group of farmers beat the mighty British Empire? ….anyway, God is sovereign and we should remember this too
A fair assessment, almost. Religion can play a pivotal role in many lives. It doesn’t mean that the said relgion is the right one or whatever. It simply means that part of making the best of the cards you are dealt can involve choosing to participate in a religion or not to. As far as we have to choose to make the best of the situation we are put in is very true. I didn’t have an easy childhood but I got over it and chose to get on with my life. I choose to do the right thing regardless of the things that have/haven’t happened to me. Hope that cleared it up. Bright Blessings to you and yours!
no … we need to bring about the RE-DISTRIBUTION of massive catholic cult mega wealth
I suppose it would be fair if you believed there was no purpose in having a life or the creation of this universe.
However, if a consciousness could have an experience beyond intellectual understanding to “Know God” then there is no question that this universe has a Creator and there is a reason and purpose for all things. Every person has lessons to learn and situations in life gives them the opportunity to learn them in order to progress spiritually. The only thing we take with us when we ‘die’ is our spiritual progress. We don’t really ‘die’ as Soul is Eternal and we return to our own Karma to pick up the lessons again. The goal of having this life is to overcome our egos, attachments to things not permanent and return to the Oneness with God.
Some take the hard path and some take the easy path. A real seeker of Truth will not be satisfied with the status quo and will be looking for what makes sense.
There is a dharma for everything, including us. We have to discover what we are here on this earth to learn and be.
The Essay on Subconscious Mind puts alot of light on the subject. Hope this helps.
